Penny Wong and Sophie Allouache have a baby and it’s boring. Fantastic!

Penny Wong (Federal minister for finance) and Sophie Allouache (partner and public servant) finally give birth to their first child. Australia has taken a step further into equality and rationality by openly welcoming a high profile politician who is both gay and a new parent. Had Penny Wong begun her career in the US, I am quite certain she would not have seen the political sucess and electorate acceptance she has seen here.

THAT is why the birth of her first child within a long term gay relationship is news.

Declaring that this isn’t news will not halt the progress of the LGBT movement no matter how adamant some might be.

Allow me to mine the comments below TheAge’s article.

How is this news?

i seriously dont understand how this is front page stuff, are we going to post pictures of her taking her first steps as well?

A very calculated screen name I see. Atheists would normally support hearing about a gay relationship and mothers would generally want to hear about new babies born to famous people (a stereotype but please prove me wrong). Comments like this one try to imply that even traditional supporters are against this news item. Not likely.

This is NOT NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who cares ???!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If only you had added a few more exclamation marks. You were only one or two away from convincing us. Swear.

My friend and his wife had a baby yesterday. So how come that’s not front page news?

Shemp, you are not the federal finance minister and in a gay relationship that’s why.

Last but not least.

how can they be parents?

the child is half related to one of them, and not related at all to the other!

Oh lordy. There would not be many “parents” left if you were to stipulate that both people must be biologically related to a child to be called its parents. The law may be strict about the definition of “parent” but the rest of society thankfully isn’t. Even so I am pretty sure there are instances where you can be legally classed as a parent without being biologically related. Adoption for a start.

BTW I know that mining the comments under TheAge articles will always come up trumps for idiotic discourse. I felt like having some fun. Plus I must add that about a hundred further comments on the page went on to criticise the comments I included in this blog post. Sanity prevails.

Good on you Penny Wong. You are currently single handedly convincing more Australians than anyone else that gay families are mainstream and, thus, well, boring. I love it. Bout time.
